As users don't want to pay premium prices for its service, MySpace today launched the ad-supported MySpace Mobile Web.
Fox Interactive Media today announced that MySpace will launch an ad-supported mobile Internet version of its wildly popular social network service. With more than 80 million potential U.S. mobile visitors per month, MySpace Mobile Web beta will be available to consumers this week. Other popular sites owned by FIM, such as IGN, AskMen and RottenTomatoes.com will also be launching ad-supported mobile versions in the coming months.
The MySpace Mobile Web and additional FIM sites will offer users a considerable amount of free content, tools, and services that were previously available only to paid subscribers. MySpace hopes that a free mobile version will significantly lower the barrier of entry for all MySpace users to access their profiles on-the-go, and expect that accessing the Internet from a mobile phone will soon be as common as text messaging and voice calling.
Within the new MySpace Mobile Web experience, free functionality will include the ability to: send and receive MySpace messages and friend requests; comment on pictures and profiles; post bulletins; update blogs; find and search for friends; and view or change mood status.
The new MySpace Mobile Web beta launch is supposed to complement the current mobile offerings which include paid services that are deeply optimized and integrated on selected devices from AT&T, T-Mobile and Helio. Most recently, a new version of the T-Mobile Sidekick 3 was announced with a tightly integrated MySpace service.
