One million early adopters have now shelled out $600 for the iPhone; will the recent price drop keep sales high?
Apple today announced it sold its one millionth iPhone yesterday, just 74 days after its introduction on June 29. The iPhone combines three devices into one; a mediocre mobile phone, a well-performing widescreen iPod and a mobile internet device with a ground-breaking multi-touch interface and a poor EDGE connection.
Without any serious competition in the US multimedia smartphone market, yet, Apple has had an easy ride so far to reach its first milestone. With mediocre calling and messaging capabilities, no carrier wanted to subsidize the iPhone, and early adopters ended up paying for Apple's mistake of focusing solely on the smartphone's interface and multimedia capabilities.
In a defensive move, Apple recently dropped the iPhone's price by $200, aiming to boost the upcoming holiday sales. We would rather have seen an improved iPhone coming this fall, which could possibly open for carrier subsidizes, but that'll likely not happen. In stead, Apple has focused on developing the iPod touch; an iPhone without the phone.
If you haven't purchased an iPhone yet, we would recommend holding off till a possible improved iPhone hits the streets. If you can't wait that long, go for the iPod touch, which will give you more of what's great about the iPhone at the same price - namely multimedia capabilities.
