Broadband-based movie download service and unit, Vudu promises on-demand HD video on an a la carte basis.
Vudu has announced the release of their namesake set-top box, a broadband device that provides instant access to approximately 5,000 movies, from both major and independent studios. Vudu says they are adding more every week.
Essentially, the set-top box provides access to an on-demand internet movie service, which Vudu claims is instant (with a 2.0 Mbps connection), with no waiting and no buffering. Movies can be rented a la carte from $0.99 to $3.99, or bought from $4.99 to $19.99. The set-top box can store up to 100 hours of purchased or rented content.
Vudu's says the hardware is HD-ready for high-definition content, and that its two USB ports will allow for future storage options, available within the next six months. Unfortunately, there is no wireless option.
Included with the set-top box is a remote, HDMI, Ethernet, composite video and stereo audio cables, AC power supply, RF antenna, 2 AA batteries and a quick-start guide. Available in the US only for $400, Vudu's web site says orders placed will ship by October 1.
