In a letter on Apple's Web site, Steve Jobs has responded to angry e-mails from iPhone owners. Does he apologize, or call us all whiny losers?
Steve Jobs has posted a personal letter on the Apple Web site addressing the angry complaint letters from early iPhone adopters. Apple drew the ire of eager customers, and even some Web sites, yesterday when it dropped the price of the 8GB iPhone by $200, cutting the cost by a third. Obviously, the already-vocal community of Apple enthusiasts on the Web was up in arms, earning coverage from even the largest U.S. news outlets.
Of course, Jobs takes care to defend Apple's decision, and why shouldn't he? We have no problem with a company cutting the price of a device, but cutting the price so soon either admits failure, or worse, that the company was using early enthusiasm to boost profits by charging early adopters more. We think it may have been a little of both.
In any case, Jobs has declared that anyone who didn't already receive a rebate or deal on an iPhone, before the price break, will receive a credit of $100 to spend on Apple merchandise. If you bought your phone within the last two weeks, Apple's policy has always been that you will receive the difference in price, under the company's price protection plan.
We think this is fair, and we already have our new shuffle picked out. Please don't buy up all the purple ones, those are ours. Now, some angry letters to Sony about the Playstation 3, and we'll be all set for the holidays.
