Olympus throws another hat into the megapixel race with its 12-megapixel compact, rounds out release with 4x zoom FE-290 and the 8-megapixel FE-280.
The slimmest 12-megapixel compact camera, the FE-300 highlights Olympus’ latest update to its FE line, which includes the FE-280 and FE-290.
The FE-300 and the FE-280 feature 2.5-inch LCD screens and 3x optical zoom, while the FE-290 sports a larger 3-inch LCD screen and 4x optical zoom.
Olympus’ face detection technology, available on all the new FE models, automatically sets focus and exposure settings to frame faces within the frame. In-camera help guides and the "shooting guide" tutorial provide detailed descriptions of how to shoot in various situations and environments and allow users to change the settings with the touch of a button.
The FE-300 and FE-280 models also feature Perfect Shot Preview and Digital Image Stabilization mode. Perfect Show Preview allows users to preview and select various effects on a multi-frame window on their LCD screen so they can see the affect of their changes before taking the picture. Olympus’ Digital Image Stabilization uses a built-in gyro sensor to track camera movement as well as high sensitivity ISO settings (1600 in full resolution) and shutter speed to reduce blur. The cameras also have automatic in-camera editing features that fix red eye, blur and lighting issues.
The FE-280, FE-290 and FE-300 will be available in August 2007, each packaged with a Li-Ion rechargeable battery and charger, USB cable, AV cable, wrist strap and CD-ROM with the OLYMPUS Master 2 software. They will retail for $200, $250 and $300, respectively.
