Fans of Sonos' multi-room system can now enjoy satellite content over the internet.
Sonos and Sirius Radio today announced the release of a new software suite, the Sonos System Software v 2.3, which allows Sonos Digital Music System users to subscribe to and receive Sirius satellite radio programming. Instead of wiring for a satellite antenna, though, Sonos users connect directly over the internet, streaming the music and talk over a broadband connection.
We got our hands on the Sonos Digital Music System at Sirius' headquarters in New York City, and we were generally pleased with what we say. The handheld control unit is nice and large, with a color screen that is easy to read and big, rubbery buttons. The device uses a navigation wheel for browsing music or radio stations, and the interface seemed responsive, though a bit dull and text-heavy. Still, we especially liked that each channel's logo showed up on the remote's screen, along with basic information about the song being played.
As a promotion for the new service, Sonos is offering a free 30-day trial of the Sirius service to new buyers. Sirius subscribers can upgrade to the Sonos Internet Radio stream for an extra $3/month, or new subscribers can sign up for $13/monthly.
