Coinciding with EA Sports' Madden 08 launch, Microsoft announces first-ever price cut for Xbox 360.

Ending their price cut-free streak at 20 months -- the longest of any console gaming system ever, by the way -- Microsoft announced a drop in the estimated retail price of their Xbox 360 console, by up to $50, as of Aug. 8, 2007.

Microsoft has timed the price drop in coordination with the release of Electronic Arts' "Madden NFL 08," scheduled for Aug. 14. "Madden NFL Football," was the top-selling game of 2006 and is the top-selling franchise of the past 10 years.

The Xbox 360 will still be offered in Core System, Premium and Elite packages, with price tags of $280, $350 and $450 respectively. The Core System comes with no HDD and a wired controller, the Premium is packaged with a 20GB hard drive, wireless controller and Xbox 360 headset. The $100 bump for the Elite system upgrades to a 120GB HD, an HDMI output and a black case.
