The HD-SD5, the world's smallest 3-chip HD camcorder to record in 1080p (for now), records onto SD/SDHC memory cards.
Panasonic has released two new full-HD camcorders, including the world's smallest 3-chip full-HD camcorder, the HDC-SD5. Both the SD5 and the new HDC-SX5 record video in Full HD, at a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution. The HDC-SD5 records to SD flash cards while the HDC-SX5 records to both SD cards and DVDs.
The HDC-SX5 can record up to 180 minutes of video on an 8GB SDHC memory card and up to 60 minutes on a 3-inch DVD-R dual-layer disc. The SD5 requires the optional VW-BN1 DVD burner to record to DVD.
Panasonic is also introducing a new mechanical, optical anti-shake mechanism, which they say results in "virtually no loss of quality." Video data from both cameras can be saved in either Sony/Panasonic's AVCHD or DVD-VIDEO format. Videos in the full-HD AVCHD format are playable on Blu-ray Disc players.
The ultra-compact HDC-SD5 will retail at $999.95, and the HDC-SX5 at $899.95, both available September 2007. The MSRP of the VW-BN1 DVD burner is $199.95.
