Samsung rolls out the SGH-A437 basic clamshell on AT&TBy Jennifer Hooker, 6 July 2007

The entry-level flip phone packs in the bare minimum when it comes to features, including a VGA camera and a monochrome external display.

Samsung offers AT&T customers a more basic alternative to the highly coveted iPhone with the entry-level SGH-A437. The clamshell is a simple calling and messaging phone and it serves up the expected features, including Bluetooth, a speakerphone and instant messaging support for AOL, MSN and Yahoo. The A437 boasts quad-band capabilities, which will allow you to chat overseas. The handset doesn’t offer many multimedia features beyond a dated VGA camera.

The Samsung SGH-A437 has a simple, unassuming design that reminds us of a few other Samsung clamshells we've seen on other carriers, namely the SCH-U540 on Verizon Wireless and the SPH-M500 on Sprint. The A437 is nice and light at just 2.9 ounces and has a relatively svelte profile at 3.7 by 1.9 by 0.6 inches. The phone shows off a bit of style with three color options including gold, red and gray, but its design takes a bit of a hit with a pair of low end screens. The external display is monochrome, and while the internal display is large at 2 inches, it has a resolution of 128 by 160 pixels.

The Samsung SGH-A437 is available immediately from AT&T and retails for $70 (a bit steep for a phone like this; $50 would have been better) with a two-year service agreement.
