The successor to Sanyo's slim clamshell is now available with a more compact design.
Sanyo recently unleashed its Katana II handset on Sprint as the successor to the original Katana, which marked one of the manufacturer's slimmest flip phones to date. The Katana II holds on to the same sleek style and thin profile at 0.6 inches, but gets slightly shorter and narrower at 3.7 by 1.9 inches compared to 3.9 by 2 inches on the original. The Katana II is also lighter than its predecessor at 3.1 ounces and has a larger internal display at two inches. Like the original, the new clamshell comes in several color options including pink, black and steel, and for the most part, maintains a similar looking face.
Sanyo doesn't improve much on the Katana II's feature set, as the handset is still an entry-level calling and messaging phone, lacking any 3G capabilities. While the handset packs in all the calling features we come to expect, including Bluetooth, a speakerphone and voice tagging, it lacks most multimedia features found on Sprint handsets beyond a VGA camera and GPS capabilities. The Katana II does also feature phone as modem capabilities, but without EV-DO network support, we're not sure of how helpful this feature will be.
The Sanyo Katana II is available immediately from Sprint and retails for $100 with a two-year service contract.
