The petite 12.1-inch notebook features an integrated DVD drive and widescreen, indoor/outdoor display.

Toshiba unveiled its Portege R500 line of laptops, featuring a very thin profile at 0.8 inches. Despite their slim waistline, the R500 series manages to fit a built-in 7mm DVD-SuperMulti drive into the notebook, which the company claims are the first 12.1-inch laptops to do so. The laptops also feature a 12.1-inch widescreen LCDs and are backlit by LEDs, making them visible in indoor and outdoor lighting conditions.

Toshiba has also toughened up its Portege R500 series, by including a spill resistant keyboard that can still function properly if soda, coffee and beer are accidentally spilled. The company also included hard drive protection features, such as the 3D accelerometer which detects acceleration from multiple directions and removes the hard drive head from between the platters.

The Portege R500 will be available in two models, the R500- S5002 and the R500-S5001X. The former is the higher-end version and includes an Intel Core Duo processor and operates on Windows Vista Business. The laptop includes 1024MB of RAM memory and 802.11n wireless networking, along with Bluetooth 2.0. The R500-S5002 also has a fingerprint reader for additional security. The R500-S5001X is the lower-end model and it includes a similar feature set, but it runs Windows XP Professional.

The Portege R500 series are available immediately and retail for $2,150 for the R500-S5002, and $2000 for the R500-S5001X.
