With some improvements under the hood and an environmentally friendly display, the updated MacBook Pro features some nice upgrades.
Apple today followed through on its promise to bring mercury-free display technology to its laptop lineup, as the company today announced that its updated MacBook Pro, available in 15-inch and 17-inch flavors, will feature new LED backlit screens. LED screens provide a lower-power option and a potentially brighter display as well.
The Mac-maker has also adopted Intel's newest chipset, code-named Santa Rosa, which brings faster Core 2 Duo "Merom" chips and improved front-side bus speeds to the line. The laptops also feature 802.11n networking and can manage up to 4GB of RAM. An Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT graphics card is available, which can drive the 17-inch model to a resolution of up to 1920 by 1200 pixels. And Apple isn't shy about mentioning the laptops support for the latest Windows operating systems, including Windows Vista, using the included Boot Camp dual-boot software.
Though the design hasn't changed much, even since the last generation PowerBook G4, Apple has managed to shave nearly a half pound off the newest models. The new laptops come just in time for Apple's World Wide Developer's Conference on June 11, at which Apple has promised that developers will be able to take home a beta version of their newest Mac OS X operating system, 10.5, Leopard.
