New point-and-shoot cameras pad their megapixel count to the double digits, but often forget about optical zoom capabilities, which can often be a more useful feature. Usually, point-and-shoot cameras don't offer much beyond a standard 3X optical zoom, but GE's mid-range E850 camera will feature 5X optical zoom. The E850 will also include an 8-megapixel sensor, a 3-inch LCD display and a 28mm wide-angle lens.
GE's E850 includes a face-detection function that automatically focuses on a subject's face, which GE claims will help taking personal portraits. The camera has image stabilization and built-in red-eye correction. The E850 also has a panoramic stitching feature that allows you to combine three images of a wide scene into a single photo.
The GE E850 will arrive in Radio Shack stores on June 10 and will retail for $200. The camera will be available at other retailers beginning in September.
