The company's latest Toughbook laptop will offer optional embedded access to Verizon Wireless' EV-DO Rev. A network.

Panasonic introduced its Toughbook 52 laptop, which offers support for Verizon Wireless' EV-DO Rev. A network. The notebook, which runs on Intel's Santa Rosa platform, also integrates WLAN and Bluetooth support to stay connected. The Toughbook 52 will have several security measures, including the Trusted Platform Module security chip, along with an optional SmartCard reader and a fingerprint scanner.

Though it is labeled as a semi-rugged computer, the Panasonic laptop meets the military 810F spec and can withstand drops up to two and a half feet on all sides. The Toughbook 52 also has a magnesium alloy case and has a shock-mounted 15.4-inch LCD display. The laptop also packs a spill-resistant keyboard into its large shell (11.3 by 14 by 2 inches), weighing in at 7.4 pounds.

The Panasonic Toughbook 52 will be available in a standard model, which will set you back $1700, or an optimized model, which features improved video and Vista performance with a 120GB hard drive and a faster CPU that will retail for $2500. According to Panasonic, both models will be available in July.
