Global BlackBerry service plus dual CDMA and GSM radios make this a potent device for world travellers.
We first learned about the BlackBerry 8830 a month ago, and RIM has kept their word to ship the device by the end of this month. Available now in Verizon Wireless stores, the BlackBerry 8830 is basically an update to the 8800, albeit with a shiny new silver coat, though it's access to Verizon Wireless' EV-DO network means you'll get 3G access, while the original 8800 only had EDGE capabilities. Unfortunately, EDGE is left off of the 8830, so while you're browsing GSM networks, you'll be stuck at GPRS speeds.
The phone is available for $300 with a contract agreement, but for a limited time, Verizon Wireless will give you an extra $100 off if you pick up a qualifying voice and data plan. We think this is a good deal, since a BlackBerry is pretty useless without a good, unlimited data plan, and the deal brings the price more in line with the Pearl on AT&T. We had some trouble deciphering Verizon Wireless' plan structure, and their Web site doesn't seem to reflect their just-announced pricing scheme, but expect to pay around $100 to $150 per month for voice and data combined.
The phone won't be a Verizon Exclusive for long. Immediately after Verizon Wireless announced the phone last month, Sprint jumped on the bandwagon to say they'd be offering a BlackBerry 8830 of their own. No word on when that carrier will make an official release announcement.
