Sanyo's Xacti E1 is a solid, middle-of-the-road camcorder that warrants a second look due to its waterproofing. Sanyo's digital camcorders are specifically designed to operate one-handed, and the E1 is no exception. The waterproofing merely adds to the active nature of the camera, with a rugged casing and an aversion to water droplets. We can easily imagine pocketing the E1 along with us on a trip to the beach, a weekend on the slopes or a fishing outing offshore. Release: June 2007. Price: $500.

With summer right around the corner, Sanyo announced its Xacti E1 waterproof camcorder, which can be fully submerged up to five feet without any extra accessories or protective housing. The video camera records in AVC/H.264 format onto SD cards or high-capacity SDHC cards, and can shoot continuous footage underwater for up to one hour at a time. The camera will be able to record for up to 10 hours with a resolution of 640 by 480 at 30fps on an 8GB SDHC card. The Xacti E1 includes a 6-megapixel sensor for capturing stills in and out of the pool, lake or beach. The camcorder also features 5X optical zooming capabilities and digital image stabilization.
The Sanyo Xacti E1 is rather compact at 4.4 by 2.8 by 1.6 inches, but it is a bit weighty at 8.3 ounces with the battery and memory card. The E1 also has a 2.5 LCD display, and several scene modes, such as a "Lamp Mode" for low lighting, along with a red-eye corrector. Once you've taken your photos and images, files can be transferred from the Xacti E1 via USB to a PC or a Mac.
The Sanyo Xacti E1 will be available in blue, white and yellow toward the middle of June and should retail for $500.
