Canon introduces the PowerShot S5 superzoom camera and PowerShot SD850 compact camera; both featuring an 8-megapixel sensor.
Canon's PowerShot digital camera line will be adding two cameras into the mix, the PowerShot S5 IS and the PowerShot SD850 IS Digital ELPH (image gallery). Both point-and-shoot cameras have an 8-megapixel sensor, 2.5-inch displays and DIGIC III processors.
The PowerShot S5 IS is the higher-end model of the two cameras and features a 12X zoom lens. The camera includes Canon's full suite of image stabilization features including optical image stabilization and the "Auto ISO Shift" feature that automatically increases the ISO setting when capturing images in low light or at high speeds. The S5 IS also features Face Detection technology, consisting of auto-focus, which Canon claims zeros in on subjects' faces for portraits, as well as auto exposure and flash exposure features that adjust to various lighting conditions. Canon also packs in a red-eye corrector.
The PowerShot S5 IS offers up four movie modes, which also take advantage of the Face Detection auto-focus and auto exposure features. The camera will also allow you to extract stills from the footage. The S5 IS resembles a DSLR more than a typical point and shoot, but it maintains a compact size at 4.6 by 3.2 by 3.1 inches. However, the camera is a bit heavier than the standard point and shoot, weighing in at about a pound.
Canon will include a 32MB SD card, a USB cable, a stereo AV cable and four AA batteries upon shipping in July. The PowerShot S5 IS will retail for $500.
The PowerShot SD850 IS Digital ELPH is the more fashionable of the two cameras, and features a diminutive design at 3.6 by 2.2 by 1 inches and 5.8 ounces. The point-and-shoot camera features a 4X optical zoom lens as well as the same image stabilization features found on the S5 IS. The ELPH also includes six video recording modes at various frame rates.
Unlike the S5 IS, the Canon PowerShot SD850 IS Digital ELPH will include a rechargeable Lithium-ion battery, along with a 32MB SD card, USB cables and AV cables when it's released in mid-June. The SD850 will set you back about $400.
