The company moves into neutral ground on next generation DVD debate and introduces its first combo player.
Samsung decided not to pick favorites in the ongoing HD-DVD/Blu-ray battle and introduced its first combo player, the Duo HD BD-UP5000. The Duo HD player will support both high-definition disk formats, as well as HDi and BD-Java so users can watch movie studio extras, like trailers, director commentary, behind-the-scenes footage and more elaborate interactive menus.
Despite claiming the title of the first to release a Blu-ray player, Samsung wanted to release the Duo HD to give its customers more choices. According do Dongsoo Jun, Executive Vice President of the Digital AV Division at Samsung, "As a member of the DVD Forum and contributor to the DVD Industry, we recognize that both HD-DVD and BD formats have merits. As such, we have decided to market a dual format player. Samsung is flexible to market HD-DVD player whenever consumers demand it. Our main concern is not technology but consumer choice."
Film studios are also pleased with Samsung's plan to release a combo player. "We welcome Samsung's Duo HD player as another solution in the marketplace that will help reduce consumer confusion and buyer hesitancy towards HD media," said Ron Sanders, President of Warner Home Video. "This is an innovative product that can move us closer to mainstream consumer adoption of HD technologies."
The Samsung Duo HD player should be released in late 2007, but no specific dates or price details have been announced.
