Toshiba is serving up the 1080p high-definition player at a price that people might actually be able to afford.
Toshiba announced that its mid-range HD DVD player, the HD-A20, is now available in the U.S. for $500. While that's still quite a large chunk of change, it's considerably less expensive than the HD-A20's high-end brother the HD-XA2, which retails for $800. The HD-A20 is also joined by the entry-level HD-A2, which will set you back $400, but it lacks the 1080p resolution that can be found on the HD-A20.
According to Toshiba, the HD-A20 allows you to convert your current DVDs to near-HD DVD quality using an HDMI interface, so that you can still enjoy your movie collection. The HD-A20's siblings also have this capability. Toshiba's trio of HD DVD players all have an Ethernet port that allows you to download new audio languages, HD trailers and streaming audio commentary, when playing a network-enabled HD DVD disk.
Toshiba is also running a promotion through July 31, 2007 that gives away five free movies to people who buy a Toshiba HD DVD player. Consumers can choose from a selection of 15 different titles in this mail-in offer.
