The popular gaming console adds Windows Live Messenger, so you can IM friends that are using a PC, another Xbox 360 or a Windows Mobile smartphone.
Starting the week of May 7th, Xbox 360 users will be able connect with friends on other Xbox 360s, Windows Mobile-powered handsets and PCs with Windows Live Messenger.
Currently Xbox LIVE members can send text and voice messages, but instant messaging allows you to chat with up to six people from your contact list simultaneously, while playing games, listening to music or watching movies. Microsoft notes that you will be able to see if your existing friends on Windows Live messenger have gamertags, when you're signed on to IM on your Xbox.
To use the IM features, Xbox owners will have to type using the virtual keyboard or by plugging in a USB keyboard to the gaming console. Microsoft will also launch an accessory for the Xbox 360 controller that has a full QWERTY keyboard for IMing this summer.
The Spring Update for Xbox 360 includes a bevy of other enhancements besides the addition of IM, such as pop-up notifications of new achievements with the score and the name of the achievement and more family settings for Xbox Live communications. The update will also bring a new Xbox LIVE Marketplace blade that lets users access movies, TV and games from one place, faster Auto Downloads for trial-version games, an auto-shut off setting for when downloads are complete, along with new download controls that let people fast-forward, pause and rewind as their video is being downloaded.
The Spring Update is free beginning the week of May 7 and is accessible via Xbox LIVE or Xbox.com.
