Aiming at users with computers that lack PCMCIA slots, Sprint will next month start offering its new EV-DO USB modem.
Sierra Wireless and Sprint today announced an agreement to supply the new Sierra Wireless AirCard 595U USB modem for access to the Sprint Mobile Broadband EV-DO Rev A network. The card will be available from Sprint next month as the "Sprint Mobile Broadband USB Modem".
The AirCard 595U USB modem can be plugged directly into the USB ports of notebook or desktop computers, or can be connected through an included docking cradle. The aim is to offer an alternative for users without PCMCIA card slots and allows them to move a single wireless data service between multiple computers.
The AirCard 595U includes an internal battery, as well as GPS capability to enable "locate and search" functionality. The card supports both Windows and Macintosh operating systems.
The Sprint Mobile Broadband USB modem will be available in April for $49.99 with a two-year subscription.
