A Nielsen survey revealed that more than a third of American adults who use the Internet also own a video game console.
As video gamers get older, video games have steadily been losing their toy status and are playing a serious role in home media setups. According to a recent survey by Nielsen//NetRatings, 36.5 percent of U.S adults who go online also own a gaming console, and 15.9 percent of online adults own a portable video game console. The survey goes on to reveal that 71 percent of those who own gaming consoles are married and 66 percent have at least one child. The last statistic begs the question: Who is actually using the video games, kids or parents?
The Nielsen survey also found that some gaming console Web sites have seen growth over the past year. Nintendo's site saw a 91 percent traffic increase between February 2006 and February 2007, which can be attributed to the popular DS handheld and the launch of the Wii console. The Xbox site also witnessed more traffic in the same period -- 47 percent more to be exact. However, Sony didn't fare as well with its Playstation site, which saw 8 percent less traffic.
The report also tracked the personal interests and vacation habits for console owners, and found that video game owners enjoy theme parks. In fact, they are 78% more interested in theme parks than the average Web user who does not own a gaming console. Theme parks also ranked as their top vacation activity, followed by water sports and major sporting events. Comic book and figurine collecting came in second and third among personal interests for video game console owners.
