The pair that brought online multiplayer to the DS team up to bring multiplayer, friend rosters, ranking and matchmaking to the Wii.
GameSpy and Nintendo are collaborating once again to bring online multiplayer gaming to Wii owners. Thanks to middleware technology created by GameSpy, a division of IGN Entertainment, Wii games will be able to support online gaming with multiple players, matchmaking, friend rosters and ranking capabilities.
The two companies were also partners in bringing similar technology to the Nintendo DS portable gaming console. Though the Wii comes bundled with Wi-Fi, so far this technology has been used for Internet-connected "channels" and simple Web browsing, and has not been seen in the popular console's games.
Pokemon Battle Revolution, the first Wii game to utilize the technology, launches on June 25, with multiplayer features similar to those leveraging GameSpy technology in several Nintendo DS titles.
