Archos today started taking pre-orders for their largest PMP yet, the Archos 704. With a 7" screen, almost three inches larger than the 604, the Archos 704 also boosts the hard drive capacity to 80GB. The large screen is WVGA for widescreen 800 by 480 pixel resolution. With the add-on DVR docking station, available for $100, the Archos 704 will allow you to record television shows and take them with you, if you don't mind lugging the device, which weighs nearly a pound and a half, around with you.
For comparisons sake, a current-gen iPod with video has a 2.5-inch screen, so the Archos 704 is clearly in a different league of devices, closer to a UMPC or Internet tablet. Its 802.11g Wi-Fi allows you to browse the internet and check your e-mail, and it comes with a touch screen and stylus for navigation. DivX files and movies purchased from certain online movie sites, like Amazon Unboxed or WalMart's video site, will work on the player, though iTunes addicts are obviously out of luck. The device even has a built-in camera that will record in VGA, though holding it up like a camcorder is probably only slightly easier than lifting a small coffee table.
Expect our full review of the Archos 604 WiFi later this week. Hopefully, we'll get our hands on this behemoth to give you our full impression in the weeks to come.
