Loaded with the popular "Geometry Wars" title, the newer memory unit will store the larger files now available from the XBLA.
If you didn't buy your Xbox 360 with the external hard drive, chances are you've been cramming downloads and game save files onto a 64MB memory unit. That changes today, as Microsoft announced an upgraded memory unit, now available in 512MB flavors.
For $50, only $10 more than the price of the original, gamers can store eight times as much data. The original unit will drop $10 to sell for only $30. The new memory unit will come pre-loaded with the game "Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved," which was inarguably the first Xbox Live Arcade title to achieve mass popularity.
The moves comes on the heels of another announcement by Microsoft, made at the Game Developer's Conference in San Francisco, that the size limit for Xbox Live Arcade downloads will be raised from 50MB to 150MB, necessitating an increase in the memory storage unit's capacity. With larger games on the way, such as the highly anticipated "Wing Commander Arena," a size increase seemed inevitable, but we still wonder whether the memory unit is the right choice.
If $50 seems a bargain for eight times the storage of the original, remember that for $100 you can buy a 20GB hard disk drive, though the HDD is hardly as portable as the memory card. The memory card can also be used to purchase content and games from retail kiosks.
The new memory unit will be available in stores on April 3.
