Using the UMA-enabled Samsung SGH-T709 and Nokia 6136 handsets, the T-Mobile HotSpot @Home service will let you place calls over Wi-Fi and GSM networks.
Employing UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access) technology, which allows for seamless transferring of calls between traditional cell networks and Wi-Fi access points, the T-Mobile HotSpot @Home service lets you make unlimited national calls over Wi-Fi, including home networks and T-Mobile's HotSpot locations. The new service is available now for subscribers in the Seattle area; T-Mobile officials declined to comment on when the service would spread to other markets.
Equipment, pricing and availability
Seattle-area HotSpot @Home users will have a choice between two UMA-enabled phones: the Samsung SGH-T709 and the Nokia 6136. Each handset will retail for $49, and they'll come bundled with Wi-Fi routers ($49, or free with a mail-in rebate). Unlimited Wi-Fi service is available for $20 a month, as long as you're subscribed to a $40-plus voice plan.
