Not impressed by Tuesday's Nseries announcements? Then check out our first impressions of Nokia's snazzy new 5300, 5200 and 3250 music phones, launched yesterday in New York City.

Editors' note: Read our full review of the Nokia 5300 XpressMusic.

It's refreshing to find a music phone like Nokia's snazzy 5300 XpressMusic that actually takes music seriously. Our tunes sounded impressively good on the 5300, and with support for both stereo Bluetooth headsets and your own high-quality set of headphones, the sporty-looking slider makes for a compelling, music-minded companion. However, with its thick design and dodgy management software, the 5300 isn't quite ready to replace your iPod nano, and we wouldn't mind some improvements in the phone's sketchy voice-calling capabilities.

Specifications

  • Tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE
  • 1.3-megapixel camera
  • Bluetooth with A2DP support
  • FM receiver
  • Dedicated music buttons
  • microSD slot (up to 2GB of storage)
  • Included headphone adapter
  • Measures: 3.6 by 1.8 by 0.8 inches
  • Weight: 3.8 ounces

Though it looks and feels almost exactly like its sibling, the 5300 XpressMusic, the entry-level 5200 pares down the features of its bigger brother while trimming the price tag. Cosmetically, it is identical to the 5300 except that its brightly colored screen pales compared to the 5300's high-resolution LCD; in addition, the 5200 has just one dedicated music button to the 5300's three. Pressing the music control launches the 5200's media player, which can play a variety of non-DRM formats and includes an integrated FM radio operating with Visual Radio. The EDGE-enabled 5200 supports Bluetooth (we're awaiting word on whether it supports the stereo Bluetooth A2DP protocol) and USB 2.0 for speedy music transfers, and includes a 2.5mm-to-3.5mm headphone adapter for using your standard headphones with the device.

The updated Nokia 3250 XpressMusic is little changed from the original. While the 3250's color scheme now closely matches the other members of the XpressMusic club, it maintains the three-way twist, camera-phone-music player functionality. The music player has been boosted by the phone's compatibility with higher-capacity 2GB microSD cards. The player can handle a wide range of non-DRM music, including WMA, AAC, MP3, and even RealAudio formats. The onboard FM radio is handled by Visual Radio. The phone features a 2-megapixel camera, as well as an adapter to use your own standard headphones. Data transmission is handled over EDGE networks.

  • Tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE
  • FM radio
  • Twist design
  • microSD slot
  • Included headphone adapter
  • Bluetooth
  • Measures 4.1 by 2 by 0.8 inches; weighs 4.6 ounces
