The Mobile Digital TV Alliance unveils DVB-H guidelines. Also, Sprint creates shows for its own mobile network, and SmartVideo finds a partner to create entertainment program guide.

The Mobile Digital TV Alliance unveils DVB-H guidelines

The Mobile Digital TV Alliance (MDTVA), a consortium whose members include Microsoft, Motorola, and Nokia, has published implementation guidelines for the Digital Video Broadcasting – Handheld standard. The group hopes publication of the guidelines will set standards for Mobile TV on handheld devices, eliminating confusion in the marketplace. The guidelines are flexible depending on the type of network or the content to be delivered. With the standard now set, US markets could see compatible mobile TV broadcasts as early as 2007. Sprint broadcasts free original videos to Sprint TV devices

Sprint will begin offering unique mobile video programming over its Sprint Power View network. A free addition to Sprint Vision and Power Vision customers, the Java-based application will broadcast short programs focusing on sports and entertainment news. NFL host James Brown will host the football show; Jim Courier will do the talking about the U.S. Open. The network will cover New York’s Fashion Week, and future programming will deal with gaming and music. (Source: Sprint)

SmartVideo teams with Action Engine for Mobile TV guide

Action Engine has been tapped by SmartVideo Technologies to provide search capabilities for their SmartVideo Mobile Entertainment Programming Guide. SmartVideo will provide content from providers such as ABC News, Fox Sports, NBC Mobile, and iFilm. Action Engine claims their search technology requires fewer keystrokes and provides faster response times for searches. SmartVideo’s service is available by subscription from their website.
