Fashionistas will get a kick out of Nokia's trio of glamourous handsets. Also: parents and kids who bond via SMS, cell phones that shriek when stolen, and a service that lets you track election returns.
Nokia dusts off its 8800, L'Amour fashion phones
Fashion is the name of the game as Nokia unleashes three flashy import handsets, including updates of the aging 8800 and L'Amour lines. First up is the 8800 Sirocco Edition, an modestly souped-up version of the 8800 and 8801 slider phones that adds a 2-megapixel camera (compared to the VGA camera on the older models), a curved thumbprint on the stainless-steel shell, and a "soundtrack" composed by composer/producer Brian Eno. (Unfortunately, the new 8800 still lacks 3G capabilities.) Also on tap is a pair of new L'Amour fashion phones: the 7390, a 3G clamshell (and Nokia's first EV-DO fashion phone) that boasts a "ceramic-inspired" shell and leather panels, along with a 3-megapixel camera, video calling, and an integrated music player; and the 7373 spinner, which comes with a 2-megapixel camera, a media player, stereo speakers, and a swanky headset. All are set for release this fall. - Ben Patterson (Source: Nokia)

Synchronica's Scream Feature hopes to reduce phone theft
The ubiquitous bells, chimes, and rings of cell phones just got louder -- a lot louder, in fact. UK-based mobile app developer Synchronica has just announced a service that will make your Windows Mobile-based smartphone shriek like a banshee if a snapped up by a handset-snatching wrongdoer. The company's downloadable Mobile Manager software locks and wipes stolen handsets, while the aptly named Syncronica Scream Feature fires off a startling, high-pitched screech. - Jennifer Hooker (Source: Synchronica)

Survey: kids more likely to keep in touch with SMSing parents
If you want to stay in touch with your kids, texting is the way to go -- at least according to a recent survey conducted by Cingular Wireless. Researchers for the carrier (which is promoting a series of new text messaging packages) found that 63 percent of parents felt it was easier to reach tight-lipped teens and tweens with SMS messages than with an uncool voice call. In addition, half of the parents surveyed learned how to SMS from their kids, while 69 percent of texting moms and dads use lingo such as "R U Home" or "BGood," according to the report. - Jennifer Hooker (Source: Cingular)
