Coming to a carrier near you by the end of the year, the new phones update the old RAZR line with glossy designs, pumped-up cameras, stereo Bluetooth profiles, and speedy network support.

Motorola MOTOKRZR K1

With its narrow profile and metallic glossy finish, the new KRZR K1 certainly cuts a fine profile. Measuring 0.6 by 1.7 by 4.1 inches and weighing in at about 3.6 ounces, the K1 actually felt a little lighter in our hands than we expected, but it attracts smudges like nobody's business. The GSM K1 handset we saw boasted Motorola's standard (read: dull) interface, although you can expect that to change once it lands in Cingular's and/or T-Mobile's handset lineup later this year. Besides its support for 2.5G EDGE data networks, the K1 comes with a 2.0-megapixel camera (an improvement on the 1.3MP cameras on the earlier RARZs) as well as Bluetooth (with stereo headset support) and microSD memory expansion.

Specifications

  • Quad-band GSM/EDGE support
  • 2-megapixel camera
  • Audio and video streaming
  • Bluetooth (including stereo Bluetooth support)
  • microSD memory expansion
  • Vocie recognition
  • Measures 0.6 by 1.7 by 4.1 inches, 3.6 ounces

If the RAZR was too wide for you, the KRZR K1m may feel just right. It does a good job as a phone, though it has a tough time handling the advanced video content Verizon offers. Features like GPS and speaker-independent voice dialing signal this as a next-generation phone, but inconsistencies in the user interface had us flummoxed. If you are looking for a capable, stylish phone, this could be it. If you want an advanced multimedia player for Web browsing and messaging, you'll want to keep looking, and RAZR owners are well advised to think carefully before ponying up for the new model.

    Specifications

  • Measures 4.1 by 1.7 by 0.7 inches; weighs 3.6 ounces
  • CDMA/EV-DO capable with dial-up networking
  • 1.3-megapixel camera
  • Integrated music player
  • GPS navigation
  • microSD slot
  • Bluetooth
  • Speakerphone
  • Talk time: 3 hours 10 minutes

    Price and availability

Available immediately from Verizon Wireless and Sprint for $199.99 with a two-year contract; also available on Alltel for $400, or $250 with a two-year service agreement.
