The Handycam DCR-SR40 is the entry-level model. This camcorder packs a huge 20X optical zoom, a 2.5-inch LCD, and a 30 GB hard drive. The DCR-SR40 is a good choice for anyone that doesn't want to bother with DVDs or tapes to record video. Like the other two new camcorders, the DCR-SR40 features Sony's HDD Smart Protection system, which combines shock protection (both physical and digital) to reduce shakiness and protect the camcorder if it's accidentally dropped.

Price and availability

The Sony DCR-SR40 will be available in September 2006 and priced at $600.

Specifications

- 20X optical zoom
- 2.5-inch LCD

Sony's next offering - the DCR-SR60 - ups the ante with a slightly larger LCD (2.7 inches) and a 1-megapixel CCD. The optical zoom is less than the DCR-SR40 at 12X but it's still impressive. This video cam includes a 30 GB hard drive and a hot shoe for attaching accessories like a microphone or light. Included with the DCR-SR60 (as well as the other two models) is a Handycam Station that connects the camcorder to your PC or TV. This accessory includes a one-touch DVD burn button so that you can instantly burn a disc when it's connected to your computer.

Price and availability

The Sony DCR-SR60 will be available in September 2006 and priced at $700.

Specifications

- 12X optical zoom
