With 3G phones finally hitting the mainstream, what on earth are people using all those fancy features for - or would like to use them for? As always, dear reader, the answer lies with you; let's find out.

If you've stepped up to a handset isle recently and found yourself overwhelmed by the booming choice in 3G phones, don't worry - there's a reason for it. It's called feature creep, and translates to handset makers including virtually every last piece of functionality they can think of into their offerings in a bid to make them more attractive. As it turns out, they might be on to something - just take a look at how evenly votes for the most compelling 3G service are dispersed.

Despite the entrance of giants like Google and MSN, Local search wound up in last place with only 5% of votes, oddly enough barely beaten by Games & Entertainment with 8%. Much-hyped video calls expectedly ended up in the number 5 spot with 14%, tieing with music downloads which also received 14%. Also tied are mobile office and mobile TV functionality with 19% of votes, which should be a hint to employers we actually do want to use that shiny new 3G phone for what they actually bought it for - yet what we covet the most is good, old-fashioned web browsing with 21%.

Surf's up with these 3G phones

O2 XDA Exec

Score: 95% When: October 2005 (O2) Worth: €800

Read the full article » Although the O2 XDA Exec is something of a colossus, there is no denying its wealth of functionality, power and versatility. Document management and data entry both excel due to the spacious display and thumbboard, while outstanding connectivity combines with comprehensive out-of-box synchronization options and good battery life to render it an excellent business phone. Nokia E61

Score: 79% When: May 2006 Worth: €450

Nokia E61

Read the full article » The E61 does what Nokia does best: connects people. Its all-encompassing connectivity setup is exploited in full by a broad line-up of quality messaging, office and browsing applications which run in tandem with a superb screen and more than decent thumbboard. Granted, it's not among the most powerful business phones nor does it fare well in the department of synchronization - but the latter is at long last addressable by several third party solutions. Sprinkle with handy utilities, attention to detail, good battery life and a compact form factor, and you end up with a very solid business phone contender indeed. Read the full article »
Nokia N80

Score: 76% When: May 2006 Worth: €675

Nokia N80

Read the full article » Starting off on a high note, the Nokia N80 camera phone lines up a brilliant high-resolution screen and 3 Megapixel-pushing camera only to put its foot in its mouth seconds later through the absence of an autofocus, which hampers its ability to produce quality stills with predictive consistency. Although it also includes the most extensive line-up of printing, publishing and image management services of any camera phone to date, it still falls marginally short of its N90 predecessor - yet retains broader overall appeal due to its music, business and wireless photo streaming functionality, rendering it a superb 3G phone. Nokia E60

Score: 79% When: May 2006 Worth: €450

Nokia E60

Read the full article » As a business phone, Nokia's E60 falls short where so many of its siblings do - on poor synchronization support. Nonetheless, the handset is equipped with outstanding connectivity and an utterly brilliant display which, with its high resolution and landscape mode, delivers thoroughly improved document viewing and web browsing. A broad software offering also contributes to a positive impression, but the lack of a thumbboard hampers data entry and document management to the degree that the E60 is rendered best suited for viewing data. Had it not lacked a camera, however, it would have made a stellar 3G phone. Read the full article »
Nokia N71

Score: 79% When: May 2006 Worth: €525

Nokia N71

Read the full article » In addition to Nokia's usual outstanding wireless performance, the slightly rotund N71 clamshell is an all-rounder which fares decently in most respects, be it whilst shooting quality 2 Megapixel stills; playing music - despite its poor out-of-box audio quality; or doing light e-mail and document viewing. Its main allure is the spacious, high-resolution 2.4-inch display which offers the ideal canvas for its browser - but sadly, this isn't fully exploited due to the lack of layout optimization. Still, the N71 offers a sufficiently broad mix of quality features to earn a hearty recommendation. Read the full article »
