Is it the form factor? The features? The design? Perhaps the price, or even ease of use? We dig deep to find out just what buyers are looking for in a phone - and pick five phones to match.
Picking a phone these days isn't necessarily a walk in the park; where once the most difficult choice you had to make was to get the one with a one-line display or splurge for the two-liner, today's handsets offer a flurry of functionality that can leave anyone's head spinning. Granted, manufacturers do try to set themselves apart by other means than features - but if we're to believe you, dear reader, they do seem to be making a safe bet on our collective technolust. We polled you to find, and here are the results.
Finishing in the jumbo spot is form factor, with a surprisingly low 4% of votes; apparently we could all care less about the ongoing Rubik's cube fascination some makers seem to have picked up. Next up comes ease of use with 12% of votes, while the pricing aspect nudges in just above with a respectable 14%. The two big winners, however, are design and size with a runner-up 20% of votes; numero uno choice features garnered a whopping 50% - and so it appears we really do want our phone to do everything.

Nokia N91
Score: 87% When: May 2006 Worth: €675
Read the full article » Not much holds the N91 back from scoring full marks in the music department; the lack of bundled quality headphones and stereo Bluetooth audio is about it. Otherwise excellent audio quality, an intuitive interface, comfortable controls and superb music transfer capabilities including Windows Media Connect support are all favoured traits, as is the massive 4 GB of storage - although we're a bit miffed by the rotund form factor. Voice and messaging capabilities are first-rate with the exception of a slightly cramped keypad, while the 2 Megapixel camera and browser are unlikely to impress. As a result of its varied feature set and hard drive reliance, battery life is expectedly average, but the N91 still outperforms the vast majority of music phones at the time of writing. Nokia N93
Score: 88% When: August 2006 Worth: €550

First-rate calling and messaging capabilities are also on the slate along with a boatload of additional features, but unless you're willing to sacrifice portability for the ultimate in imaging there are better balanced options to be had. Sony Ericsson W900i
Score: 80% When: December 2005 Worth: €550
Read the full article » As a 3G phone, the Sony Ericsson W900i falls short only in the areas of web browsing and battery life - the latter of which is due to its extensive feature set. Despite these shortcomings, however, the handset goes on to impress with snappy and comprehensive connectivity, hassle-free video calling and a glorious high-resolution screen. As for music, the W900i does an admirable job of replacing lower-end MP3 players with its high sound quality and intuitive user interface, but doesn’t offer the most extensive memory with only 512 MB out-of-box.
