Amp'd Mobile goes the pre-paid wayBy Ben Patterson, 1 June 2006

The hip virtual carrier adds a series of pay-as-you-go options to its slate of plans, putting it in direct competition with pre-pay MVNOs such as Virgin Mobile and Boost.

Amp'd Mobile's new pay-as-you-go plans start at $20 a month and top out at $50 a month. Minutes go for 10 cents each, while text messages are 10 cents each and picture messages cost 25 cents per message. You can also get push-to-talk for $1 a day and purchase songs and videos for 99 cents each. Ringtones, wallpapers, and games range from 99 cents to $4.99. The new pre-pay plans don't require a contract.

Previously, Amp'd Mobile offered only traditional post-pay service agreements with 18-month contracts. Now that it's offering pre-pay, no-contract plans, Amp'd (known for its edgy, eyebrow-raising TV commercials) has jumped in the ring with such youth-oriented pre-pay MVNOs such as Virgin Mobile and Boost Mobile.

Launched in late 2005, Amp'd Mobile piggybacks on Sprint’s CDMA/EV-DO network and offers a handful of 3G handsets, including the Kyocera Jet and the Motorola E816 "Hollywood".
