A new software upgrade from Nokia for its 770 Internet Tablet adds SIP-based VoIP support to the device with Google Talk as its preferred provider. Also: a full-screen soft keyboard for text input.
Delivering on its promise to offer a software upgrade for its Linux-powered 770 Internet Tablet, Nokia today made available its Internet Tablet OS 2006 as a free download for existing owners of the web-centric tablet. The upgrade adds support for SIP-based voice over IP (VoIP), enabling Internet telephony with Google Talk as the preferred provider. As part of the upgrade, the device also gains an enlarged soft keyboard to ease text input, taking advantage of the entirety of its 4.5-inch touch screen.
Other aspects of the upgrade include a refreshed look, as well as a redesigned home view desktop letting users choose from a number of small, Internet-connectible applets in the vein of the most recent versions of Mac OS X. Also, according to Nokia, memory performance has been improved.
