3.2 Megapixels, Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus and a mechanical shutter; the Nokia N73 squeezes high-level photography into a compact candybar form factor with a broad range of features.

Sporting a 2.4-inch high-resolution display which doubles as a viewfinder for its 3.2 Megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, the Nokia N73 makes a solid stab at obtaining a high feature-to-size ratio. With the ability upload pictures directly to the popular Flickr photo sharing community, the handset also incorporates 3G support with video calling, as well as integrated stereo speakers with virtual 3D surround for backing up its music player software.

Unveiled today alongside the Nokia N93 and N72, both models which hold a certain prowess in the imaging department, other highlights of the N73 include the ability to print pictures either via Infrared, Bluetooth or PictBridge; tune in to the stereo FM radio; or browse the web with Nokia's web browser with Mini Map functionality for traversing full-size web pages.

Price and availability

The Nokia N73 is expected be available from July 2006 in one of three colour schemes: silver grey/deep plum, frost white/metallic red and frost white/mocha brown. Pricing for the handset was not announced.

Nokia N80

Score: 76% When: May 2006 Worth: €675

Nokia N80

Read the full article » Starting off on a high note, the Nokia N80 camera phone lines up a brilliant high-resolution screen and 3 Megapixel-pushing camera only to put its foot in its mouth seconds later through the absence of an autofocus, which hampers its ability to produce quality stills with predictive consistency. Although it also includes the most extensive line-up of printing, publishing and image management services of any camera phone to date, it still falls marginally short of its N90 predecessor - yet retains broader overall appeal due to its music, business and wireless photo streaming functionality, rendering it a superb 3G phone. Nokia N90

Score: 83% When: August 2005 Worth: €675

Nokia N90

Read the full article » As the first camera phone to apply proper optics along with a mix of a quality 2-megapixel sensor, a brilliant high-resolution screen and a good selection of image management software, it's no wonder Nokia's N90 is best-in-class. Granted, it’s also an unwieldy beast, but this allows for a more flexible approach to snapping pictures and recording video due to its ability to shape-shift for shooting from the hip. Its external display isn't of much use, however, and we certainly yearn for better synchronization to back up its decent amount of storage. Read the full article »

Sony Ericsson K800i

Score: 90% When: June 2006 Worth: €475

Sony Ericsson K800i

Read the full article » Although more susceptible to camera shake than a low-end digital camera, the Sony Ericsson K800i is in fact capable of replacing just such a product; a considerable feat, even though the vast majority of users will not want to rely on it for preserving precious memories. Its imaging prowess is backed up by strong performance in the areas of calling and messaging, while its browser is of the rather mediocre sort; handy, then, that the overall impression is picked up by the inclusion of a stereo FM radio with RDS, a RSS reader and even a sprinkle of stereo Bluetooth audio for an otherwise unnoteworthy MP3 player. Samsung SGH-D870

When: June 2006

Samsung SGH-D870

Image gallery »
Read the full article » The latest addition to Samsung's venerable line-up of slider handsets, the SGH-D870 is a 3 Megapixel camera phone closely related to the previously released SGH-T809 and SGH-D820. Although snapping stills and recording video isn't as straightforward an affair as with other handsets due to the lack of an application-triggering lens cover, the user interface is an intuitive bit of work which graces the usual kind of high-quality screen we've come to expect from Samsung. As for music, suffice to say you should look elsewhere. Read the full article »
