Buy or wait: Camera phonesBy Jørgen Sundgot, Friday 21 April 2006
The number of 2 Megapixel camera phones to choose from has never been greater, but handsets with 3 Megapixel sensors lurk just around the bend; should you buy now or save your money for later?

As of this writing, anyone shopping for a camera phone is in for something of a rollercoaster ride as the number of 2 Megapixel offerings has bloomed as of late. To eliminate this particular problem, infoSync World maintains a Top Rated list of the best choices available to you if you simply can't wait to lay your hands on one - but with 2006 poised to become the year of the 3 Megapixel camera phone, however, it would only be prudent to pose the obvious question: should you buy now or wait?

Not bad at all, but not that good either

Currently topping out at 2 Megapixels, only a precious few camera phones currently in sale produce impressive results - within the constraints of their resolution, that is. Although decent printouts can be achieved from shots taken with the Carl Zeiss-equipped Nokia N90 or Sony Eriscsson's K750i, we still recommend opting for a dedicated digital camera to preserve precious memories as even these models lack in areas of image processing and flash, among others - not to mention that 2 Megapixel photos don't scale well.

Increasing resolution to 3 Megapixels, the next generation of camera phones bring us all one step closer to ditching the dedicated digicam, enabling printouts which should be close to indistinguishable from film cameras of yesteryore - yet still don't scale too well. Resolution alone, however, does not necessarily make for improved picture quality, but early hands-on impressions of alternatives such as the Sony Ericsson K800i and Samsung SGH-Z710 do indeed look promising.

Hold your horses

In summary, those not in immediate need of a camera phone as of April 2006 should sit tight for the next six months, a timeframe within which a number of options are slated to become available in varying price classes and with different levels of functionality. If you simply can't wait, we recommend taking a look at our Top Rated list of the best camera phones currently available.
