Whether for snapping stills or shooting video, we rank five contenders for the number one spot as Europe's best camera phone - and as it turns out, proper optics is a requirement.
Nokia N90 (Score: 85%, Very good)
Combining accurate colour representation with spot-on autofocus, a superb high-resolution display and a swiveling lens module with Carl Zeiss optics which allows for shooting from low or high angles, Nokia's 2-Megapixel N90 offers up an excellent - albeit large - hardware base for photography. Add a suite of quality image management software, printing via either PictBridge or Bluetooth and the ability to record video at QCIF resolution, and the result is a purebred camera phone. More...
Sony Ericsson K750i (Score: 80%, Very good)
Snapping crisp and well-saturated stills, Sony Ericsson's K750i has received much praise for its imaging capabilities - and rightly so. Although not quite as good as the N90, this handset delivers admirable 2 Megapixel stills which only lack a little with regard to contrast. Its performance under poorly lit conditions is particularly noteworthy, rendering it the best choice for avid party-goers, while its auto focus and macro focus performance is best described as splendid. Nokia 6270 (Score: 75%, Very good)
Although fitted with a 2 Megapixel sensor, the image management capabilities of the Nokia 6270 are not as extensive as those of its bigger sibling, the N90. Similarly, the lack of quality optics make for lower quality results - although fully adequate with good saturation, a slightly off-kelter white balance and impeccable performance in daylight. Unfortunately, autofocus is nowhere to be found, and the quality of pictures shot under poorly lit conditions is only so-so. More...
Panasonic VS6 (Score: 70%, Good)
The best aspects of the 2 Megapixel camera of the Panasonic VS6 include its outstanding high-resolution display and low shutter lag, the latter of which allows for capturing action-filled stills while the action is in fact still ongoing. Resulting pictures are of good quality with decent white balance and colour reproduction, but a mere 32 MB of onboard storage and no means of memory expansion represents a solid speed bump for avid shutterbugs. LG P7200 (Score: 60%, Good)
It's not that LG's P7200 is particularly bad - it's just not particularly good either. Mediocre across the board, the most notable trait of this phone is its ability to rotate its swivel cover 180 degrees and close it back on top of the keypad to make for a super-slim digital camera look-a-like. Although sporting an auto focus, the 2 Megapixel camera has a tendency to create blurry shots even in daylight due to its slow shutter speed. This one is better at looking good in pictures than taking them. More...
