Snazzy screens and speedy 3G signify the best of Vodafone's line-up of handsets at CeBIT 2006, including handsets from Samsung, Sharp, Motorola and Sony Ericsson.
Sharp 903
Launched last summer, Sharp's 903 is still sets the bar for Vodafone's more recent handsets with a superb display and an excellent numerical keypad. At 3.2 Megapixels, its outstanding camera enjoyed a 6-month head start on every competitor in the European market and still ranks as one of the best available; unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the mediocre music player. It's also a large beast which incorporates Bluetooth for short-range connectivity, and a much-needed miniSD card slot for memory expansion.
Samsung SGH-Z540
Combining a razor-sharp, large display with excellent ergonomics and a slim - yet somewhat tall - clamshell form factor, Samsung's SGH-Z540 focuses on delivering a 3G experience without the all-encompassing feature sets for which the company is known. Its camera and music player both rank as mediocre, but business users should find a capable alternative complete with Bluetooth for hooking ones laptop up to the Internet. More...
Samsung SGH-Z400
Quite possibly the 3G phone equivalent of the Volkswagen Beetle, the SGH-Z400 is an upgraded version of Samsung's incredibly popular SGH-D600 slider. Its feature set remains nearly identical with a superb high-resolution display housed in a compact slider form factor alongside a quality 2 Megapixel camera, a so-so audio player and Bluetooth stereo audio streaming. Add microSD card expansion, and you're left with a well-performing all-rounder.
Motorola RAZR V3x
Every bit as thin as its predecessor, Motorola's RAZR V3x excels on hardware - but faces fierce competition where the original RAZR had nearly none. Its outstanding screen and compact form factor is hampered by the average performance of the 2 Megapixel camera, music player and numerical keypad, while its user interface is in dire need of a usability upgrade - particularly with regard to visual feedback and indicators. Sony Ericsson V600i
Faring fairly well with regard to handset size and video call performance, the Sony Ericsson V600i is something as unusual as a better version of the maker's own plain-vanilla K600i, courtesy of a better keypad and - arguably - better looks. Sadly, its inclusion of an MP3 player with only 30 MB of storage and no means of memory expansion is laughable at best - but in between these extremes, we find a decent 1.3 MP camera and a bright and clear, yet small, screen.
