As far as slim phones go, LG's K320 is the best we've seen to date. Also; the TV-toting V9000; 5-Megapixel KG920 camera phone; and the U8500 and U8550 3G clamshells.
LG V9000 hands-on impression
Following in the footsteps of Samsung's SGH-P900 and SGH-P910, the rather obese LG V9000 is equipped with a high-resolution, 2.2-inch slide-up screen which swivels into landscape mode for DMB-T TV viewing. It's not among the brightest we've seen, but reception and performance proved impeccable - and as an added bonus it's also capable of recording live TV to its 30 MB of onboard memory or microSD cards. Other highlights include a 1.3 Megapixel camera and Bluetooth, with availability slated for May 2006.
LG KG920 hands-on impression
At 5 Megapixels, LG's KG920 is Europe's highest-resolution camera phone thus far, also throwing in a 3x optical zoom lens and aufofocus for good measure. Unfortunately, so-so camera performance combines with a bulky swivel design, sub-par keypad usability and a general lack of attention towards phone functionality to render this a poor choice for phone and camera buyers alike. It will, however, include an excellent high-resolution display, 128 MB of memory and a miniSD card slot for expansion when it hits shelves in June 2006.
LG U8500 hands-on impression
The successor to LG's popular U880, the U8500 is a slim 3G clamshell which remains nearly identical to its predecessor save for polished software and a slightly improved camera application. In short, this remains one of the market's better choices for a slim 3G phone, courtesy of its superbly compact form factor, good 3G performance, a first-rate display and an ergonomically superior keypad. Throw in a 1.3 Megapixel camera, video calling and microSD memory expansion, and you have a winner - which also happens to be in stores now.
LG KG320 hands-on impression
Rarely have we seen a slim phone which leaves such an admirable first impression. The elegantly designed KG320 is the first handset which doesn't compromise on ergonomics in order to achieve a slimmer form factor, resulting in the inclusion of a high-quality keypad and an excellent display in a wafer-thin form factor. Advanced functionality is expectedly absent, although Bluetooth and USB 1.1 support makes for decent connectivity - for as long as its modestly sized battery will last. Due out in May 2006, it even includes the obligatory useless music player.
LG U8550 hands-on impression
Want to stream video via 3G to your mobile phone but don't quite feel like forking over a small fortune for a handset with a suitably sized screen to avoid severe squinting? LG's wide-screen U8550 comes to the rescue with a 20% broader viewing experience, be it for watching a bit of telly, video conferencing over 3G or gazing at snapshots taken with the integrated 1.3 Megapixel camera. Want something larger still? Offload your pictures to the nearest PC courtesy of microSD memory cards. Lastly, a word of warning; the inclusion of dedicated music buttons does in no way mean this is a music phone.
