Newcomer BenQ-Siemens P51 goes up against names such as the Nokia E61, Fujitsu Siemens' Pocket LOOX T830, the Sony Ericsson M600i and T-Mobile's MDA Vario II; make or break?
T-Mobile MDA Vario II hands-on impression
Not only on par with the T-Mobile MDA Pro as far as connectivity is concerned, T-Mobile's new MDA Vario II chalks up just about any wireless standard under the sun including Bluetooth 2.0, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, 3G and HSDPA. A snappy performer not much larger than its predecessor, the MDA Vario, it also includes a redesigned yet highly comfortable thumbboard; a superb 2.8-inch touch screen; and a 2 Megapixel camera - all powered by Windows Mobile 5.0. Due out in the third quarter of 2006, price unknown.
Nokia E61 hands-on impression
Marking Nokia's first proper business phone beyond its 9300i Communicator, the E61 opts for a deliciously slim form factor with a stand-out thumbboard and marvellous landscape screen. 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 1.2 and USB 2.0 make for snappy connectivity across every standard, whilst a reasonable amount of onboard memory combines with a miniSD card slot for further expansion. Lastly, the inclusion of broad groupware support and first-rate document management makes this a particularly interesting entrant - due out this March. More...
Fujitsu Siemens Pocket LOOX T830 hands-on impression
The Fujitsu Siemens' Pocket LOOX T830 is an impressively compact yet connectivity-laden device which in addition to GPS also boasts 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 and USB 1.1 as well as a row of business-oriented features including a decent thumbboard and a 2 Megapixel camera for video calling. Unfortunately, its display is not only of low resolution but also rather small at 2.4 inches, and as such does not lend itself well to GPS navigation in addition to being somewhat cramped for ordinary use. Sony Ericsson M600i hands-on impression
All dressed up in Apple white, the M600i doesn't look much like a business phone at first glance - but take a closer look, and its unusual thumbboard reveals a device primed for messaging on the go. Although difficult to get used to as two characters reside on each rocker key, it's a truly impressive business performer with its high-resolution touch screen; a raft of push e-mail software; extensive document management capabilities; and speedy performance. We can't say the inclusion of a handy scroll wheel and Memory Stick Micro expansion do anything to put us off this one, either. More...
BenQ-Siemens P51 hands-on impression
Nearly identical to its P50 predecessor, the BenQ-Siemens P51 improves on the maker's first proper business phone with features including Windows Mobile 5.0, built-in Wi-Fi 802.11b/g and even integrated GPS. Alas, despite these features and snappy performance, the device lacks support for 3G or even EDGE - but at least includes Bluetooth and a top-notch, 2.8-inch touch screen. Its thumbboard is also quite comfortable, but is difficult to use in daylight as its silkscreened keys offer virtually no contrast.
