Sweet music, larger-than-life thumbboards, Megapixel cameras and speedy downloads are on the slate as we pick our five most favourite handsets from LG's line-up for the US market.
LG VX9800
Turn on, tilt sideways and open; while anonymous on the outside, LG's VX9800 delivers quite a surprise when opened. What appears to be a modest candybar in fact holds a considerably-sized thumbboard along with a high-resolution 262K colour screen, EV-DO for blazing download speeds and a 1.3 Megapixel for snapping stills and recording video on the go. Unusually for Verizon, Bluetooth Dial-Up Networking is also in place to let laptop users get online, and starting at $350 USD you also get speaker independent voice recognition and miniSD memory expansion. LG CU320
As LG's latest music phone, the CU320 measures up to the competition on Cingular's network with an MP3 player and microSD memory expansion to help alleviate its paltry 15 MB of onboard memory. It's also a 3G phone, and offers a 2-inch, 262K colour display for enjoying downloaded content and a 1.3 Megapixel camera for recording videos and shooting pictures. Additionally, Bluetooth 1.1 makes an appearance, but with lack of support for streaming audio in stereo shouldn't be considered an option to be favoured over wired output. Due out shortly, price unknown. More...
LG VX8100
Another Verizon handset, the VX8100 is a capable clamshell equipped with EV-DO for high speed data downloads and a 1.3 Megapixel camera for video recording and taking stills. Its Bluetooth capabilities will only allow for the connection of headsets, but the presence of miniSD card expansion should let users offload pictures whilst at the same time uploading music to the pared-down music player of the handset. Starting at $200 USD, it also offers instant messaging and 3D gaming. More...
LG F9200
Making a GSM twist on the CDMA-reliant VX9800, LG's F9200 also includes a large thumbboard - but this one slides out rather than opens, a design which readily eliminates the possibility of an internal display. Settling for just one of the 65K colour variety, other features are also more modest than the VX9800, including its 0.3 Megapixel camera and lack of 3G and Bluetooth connectivity. Still, the handset does offer instant messaging services, and retails for a modest $150 USD. More....
LG MM-535
Served up by Sprint, the last phone on our list is the MM-535, a compact clamshell which includes a music player with support for MP3 and AAC files as well as a 1.3 Megapixel which performs the usual still-picture taking and video recording. miniSD card expansion alleviates the somewhat constrained 32 MB of onboard memory, and the handset also incorporates video-on-demand streaming into its slider form factor, starting at $230 USD.
