Nokia 6131
Score: 80% When: June 2006 Worth: €300 What: Clamshell phones, Nokia phones
Probably the sleekest Nokia handset to date and obviously inspired by the Motorla RAZR series, the Nokia 6131 springs open at the push of a button to reveal a top-notch, 2.2 inch hi-res display which doubles as a user friendly interface for the decent-quality 1.3 Megapixel camera. Snappy user interface performance as well as a comfortable keypad and navigation layout take the 6131 to mid-range heights, but music lovers should look elsewhere due to the so-so music player, lack of dedicated music controls and an absolute minimum of onboard memory. A microSD card slot is hidden underneath the battery, yet we crave for a bundled USB 2.0 cable and decently-sized memory card for transferring and storing music; battery life is average for a mid-range phone at approximately 2.5 hours of talk time and 5 days of standby. Although sadly lacking 3G, the inclusion of EDGE adds to a highly recommended total for the average Joe at a price tag of €300.

Nokia 6136 launch coverage
Bridging two of the world's most ubiquitous wireless standards, the Nokia 6136 is set to become the first commercially available UMA handset when it launches some time in the second quarter of 2006. UMA, or Unlicensed Mobile Access, allows users to roam seamlessly between Wi-Fi and GSM networks for the purpose of increased data transfer speeds and coverage. To date, the only other UMA-enabled handset to be given a launch date is the Samsung
SGH-T709 for the US, also due out in Q2.
Operator Orange has been lined up as an initial customer for the clamshell 6136, which in addition to its quad-band GSM and Wi-Fi support features a 1.3 Megapixel camera, microSD memory expansion and a 262K colour internal display. Also on tap is a stereo FM radio with Visual Radio support as well as Nokia Xpress audio messaging, with the 6136 claiming up to 280 hours of standby and 5 hours of talk time in GSM or alternatively up to 5.5 hours of talk time and 82 hours of standby in UMA mode. Pricing unknown.
Nokia 6131 launch coverage
Taking high-resolution displays to the mid-range, Nokia's 6131 boasts a QVGA display with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels, providing a window to features such as a 1.3 Megapixel camera, stereo FM radio and Bluetooth. A quad-band GSM handset with support for EDGE, the 6131 incorporates a one-press open feature to release the clamshell handset into open position.
Other highlights include microSD memory expansion and support for Nokia's Xpress audio messaging as well as Push-To-Talk, in addition to an e-mail client with attachment support and the ability to rely on the external 262K colour display as a viewfinder for the integrated camera. The Nokia 6131 is expected to be available in EMEA and select Latin American markets in the second quarter of 2006, selling in the €275 EUR range.
Nokia 6070
Bringing up the rear is the Nokia 6070, which offers basic camera phone capabilities and a stereo FM radio in a classic Nokia design. Powered by the Series 40 platform, the handset features tri-band GSM with EGE support, as well as push-to-talk support and an e-mail client. Due out in the second quarter of 2006, the Nokia 6070 is slated to sell for €135 EUR.
