It's no longer the most capable slim clamshell around, but NEC's RAZR-beating L1 clamshell out-thins most competitors as it adds EDGE and i-mode to become the 500iS.
Improving on its
L1 clamshell launched in September 2005 as the thinnest and most capable clamshell around, NEC today unveiled an upgrade to the L1 in its 500iS. Still measuring in at 90.8 x 47.9 x 11.9 mm and 94 g, the tri-band GSM handset now adds EDGE to its line-up of features for improved data transfer speeds, as well as support for the i-mode mobile content service which has been met with limited success in Europe.
Although surpassed in features by entrants such as the Motorola
RAZR V3x and Samsung's
SGH-Z540, the 500iS appears to retain its claim to the throne of thin. Features include an external OLED display and 1.3 Megapixel camera, as well as a 1.9-inch 65K internal colour display with a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels. Also present is Bluetooth and MP3 playback capabilities, as well as USB with PictBridge support for direct-to-printer output.
Claiming a battery life of up to 100 hours of standby time and up to 140 minutes of talk time, pricing and availability for the NEC 500iS have yet to be announced.
