Streaming a smorgasboard of audio and video formats in resolutions up to 1080p, Linksys' new KiSS DP-600 looks to be the most comprehensive media extender on the block.

Possibly the most comprehensive media extender to date, the new KiSS DP-600 from Linksys offers streaming of a barrage of media formats over either Wi-Fi 802.11b/g or Ethernet connections. The extender, which also incorporates a DVD player, can access content through its support for the UPnP protocol from either network shares, USB Mass Storage devices or DVDs, and also features a number of online services including weather forecasts and games.

Rear-ending competitors such as the Acer Media Gateway MG-3001P, the DP-600 boasts Windows Media 9 HD, DivX HD, Nero Digital, XviD and MPEG1/2/4 video as well as Windows Media Audio, WMA Pro, MP3 and Ogg Vorbis for audio. Also, JPEG and PNG are supported for photo viewing, with the KiSS DP-600 outputting at up to 1080p resolution in PAL, SECAM or NTSC formats through either Composite, S-Video, SCART, Component or HDMI. For audio, stereo RCA outputs, coaxial and optical SPDIF are available.

Due out in the first quarter of 2006, the expected pricing of the Linksys KiSS DP-600 is as of yet unknown.
