Super-size screens and sizzling specs; the Dell Inspiron E1705, Sony VAIO VGN-A600, Fujitsu LifeBook N6140, ASUS W2J and Acer TravelMate 8200 make most desktops look like sissies.
Dell Inspiron E1705
The latest addition to Dell's line-up of Media Center enabled notebooks, the Inspiron E1705 comes with a choice of Intel's new dual core processors running in tandem with a 256 MB Nvidia GeForce Go 7800 graphics chipset for top-of-the line performance. A 17-inc widescreen doesn't hurt either, nor does up to 2 GB of RAM; an ExpressCard slot; a Dual Layer DVD drive; and Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 - with optional TV tuner. Starts at $2,300 USD, out now.
Sony VAIO VGN-A617S
Stylish as always, Sony's new VAIO VGN-A600 series maxes out with the VGN-A617S which marries an Intel Pentium M 760 processor and ATI Mobility Radeon X700 graphics card with a widescreen 17-inch boasting Sony's unmistakable X-Black and dual lamp design. Its bundled Entertainment Docking Station for improved audio as well as TV watching and recording, and its Dual Layer DVD drive should make archiving said content a breeze. From €1,950 EUR and up, you also get automatic brightnes adjustment, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a wireless mouse.
Fujitsu LifeBook N6140
Dual to the Core, the LifeBook N6410 from Fujitsu includes the full encore of Intel technology including tri-mode Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g. Like the two former powerhouses, it boasts a 17-inch widescreen display, propelled by ATI Mobility Radeon x1400 graphics with 256 MB of HyperMemory. So, what are you going to view on it? Well, with up to 320 GB of hard drive space you're likely to be able to find something to stick on there - especially since it runs Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. Due out in the first half of 2006 for an unknown price.
Acer TravelMate 8200
At up to 2.16 GHz, the TravelMate 8200 is also - you guessed it - a Dual Core equipped notebook with tri-mode Wi-Fi and a generally impressive set of specifications. Its 15.4-inch widescreen display might look a tad modest, but is driven by an ATI Mobility Radeon x1600 graphics card with a stunning 512 MB of HyperMemory, 256 MB of which is dedicated video memory. Oh, and you also get up to 160 GB of storage, a 1.3 Megapixel camera and Bluetooth for good measure. Available now starting at €2,300 EUR.
ASUS W2J
You should know the specifications by now; Intel Centrino Duo, which entails a Dual Core processor of the buyer's choosing, along with Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g and a 17-inch widescreen with ASUS' Colour Shine LCD technology and a choice of either WXGA or WSXGA resolution. Delivered with either Windows XP Home or Professional, this laptop boasts a hybrid analog/DVB-T tuner and will be available in late January 2006; price unknown.
