Meet Hewlett-Packard's 50-inch plasma, the similarly-sized Pioneer and the Philips with surround style backlighting - and lest we forget, Samsung's 63- and 80-inch behemoths.
Samsung HP-R8082
The largest plasma which you can actually go out and purchase, Samsung's flagship HP-R8082 boasts a larger-than-life 80 inches of viewing space in glorious 1080p resolution. Equipped with a range of A/V inputs, this giant plasma sports Samsung's proprietary DNIe imaging technology for improved picture quality, and also supports the company's Anynet home networking technology for multi-component remote control. Due out in February, it will sell for $Ouch.
HP PL5060N
Taking it down a few notches, Hewlett-Packard's HP PL5060N offers a 'mere' 50 inches, also lowering the resolution to 1024 x 768 pixels and thus maxing out at 720p. With a contrast ratio of 10,000:1, it supports every audio and video connector under the sun including HDMI, as well as a slew of video enhancers and a hybrid ATSC/NTSC/QAM tuner. Fitted with 2 x 8W speakers and SRS WOW virtual surround sound, expect this one to hit shelves in early summer for an unknown price.
Philips 50PF9631
Although no larger than HP's offering, the Philips 50PF9631 offers the Dutch maker's three-sided Ambilight Surround concept for a unique twist in where the TV is equipped with a scene-matching backlight in a bid to improve the viewing experience. Other highlights include the usual battery of connectors along an integrated ATSC tuner and CableCard slot, and - surprisingly - USB Host capabilities and a multi-format memory card reader for picture viewing purposes. Due out in July 2006, this one goes for $4,000 USD.
Samsung HP-R6372
Moving back to Samsung, we find yet another behemoth-size plasma in the 63-inch HP-R6372. Less than four inches deep, this set offers a built-in ATSC tuner and CableCard expansion slot, as well as the same DNIe image improvement technology as found in its big brother, the HP-R8082. If you're filthy rich, a quick swipe of the credit card and $12,000 USD later you'll be the proud owner of a HP-R6372 - available immediately.
Pioneer PRO-FHD1
Lastly, Pioneer's PRO-FHD1 ends things on a comfortable 50-inch note sprinkled with 1080p resolution. In fact, that is all the company will reveal until this little nugget is available in May, at which time it will lag only a couple of thousand dollars behind Samsung's HP-R6372 despite being 13 inches smaller; its price tag reads $10,000 USD.
