Offering 2 Megapixel sensors, 2.5-inch LCD viewfinders and up to 13 hours of DVD quality recording, Toshiba's gigashot GSC-R30 and GSC-R60 enter the HDD camcorder arena with a bang.
At this year's Consumer Electronics Show, hard drive camcorders are everywhere with brand new entries including the Sanyo Xacti HD1, Sony's Handycam DCR-S100 and the JVC Everio GZ-MG77. To compete against these heavyweights, Toshiba is launching its gigashot GSC-R30 and GSC-R60 camcorders, boasting competitive specifications and - in the case of the GSC-R60 - unparallelled storage capacity.
Similar in all respects with the sole exception of storage capacity, the gigashot camcorders come fitted with 2 Megapixel CCD sensors and 2.5-inch LCD viewfinders with 210K pixel resolutions. The massive 60 GB storage capacity of the GSC-R60 allows for up to 13 hours of DVD quality video recording at a bit rate of 9.6 Mbps or up to 20 hours at a bit rate of 6 Mbps; the GSC-R30 with its 30 GB hard drive delivers half of these times.
Both models also come with an SD memory card slot should users find it necessary to add further storage, as well as electronic image stabilization and a built-in gyroscope for hard drive drop protection. The GSC-R60 also comes with a docking cradle that includes a USB 2.0 port, Ethernet connectivity, an AC adaptor and an AV output.
The camcorders also include AC/DSEE and PowerProducer software to allow for still image and video editing as well as DVD authoring and burning, also including a 3-button 'burn to DVD' feature for added simplicity.
Expected to start shipping in February 2006, the Toshiba gigashot GSC-R30 and GSC-R60 will sell for $800 USD and $1,000 USD, respectively.
