The veil is lowered as Palm reveals full specifications for one of 2006' most anticipated communicators, the Windows Mobile 5.0 powered Treo 700w with EV-DO and Bluetooth.

At the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the handset maker formerly known as palmOne today announced the immediate availability of its first Windows Mobile based communicator through carrier Verizon Wireless. Also announced were the complete technical specifications for the device, which is to measure force with a formidable crowd of competitors including the Motorola Q and Verizon XV6700.

Building on the popular design of its predecessors, the Treo 650 and Treo 600, the Treo 700w features a square colour screen placed above a QWERTY thumbboard in a candybar form factor. Windows Mobile 5.0 runs atop an Intel processor and 128 MB of non-volatile memory, of which 60 MB is available as dedicated user storage with further expansion possible by way of an integrated SDIO capable SD/MMC card slot.

Also to compete against devices such as the Samsung SCH-i830 and Sprint's PPC-6700, the Treo 700w features a 1.3 Megapixel camera capable of shootings stills and recording video, as well as Bluetooth 1.2 for short-range wireless connectivity; profiles supported include among others Headset, Handsfree and Basic Printing.

Equipped with EV-DO support for high-speed data transfers and an exchangeable battery, the software of the Treo 700w has been augmented by Palm in several ways. In addition to coming pre-installed with Microsoft's Voice Command suite for voice dialing, several Today Screen plug-ins enable functionality such as dialing by name directly from the standby screen; one-touch dialing with photo speed dials; VCR-like controls for voice mail; and the ability to ignore calls with the automatic creation of new text messages.

The Palm Treo 700w smartphone from Verizon Wireless is available immediately for $500 USD with a two-year service agreement.
