A 3.5-inch QVGA display, dual expansion slots and broad format support are all traits shared by the ZVUE 400 and 500 - but only the latter has Wi-Fi and a phone style keypad.
Introducing its first portable media viewers designed for landscape format viewing, HandHeld Entertainment today unveiled the ZVUE 400 and 500. The two portable media viewers share the majority of features, but the latter tacks on a phone-style keypad and Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g connectivity as well as a total of 1 GB of onboard flash memory where the former is content with 512 MB.
Apart from the differences mentioned above and slight physical dissimilarities, the two devices are identical with respect to their 3.5-inch screens with QVGA resolution and the inclusion of SD/MMC and CompactFlash Type II card expansion slots for extending storage. Capable of playing back video in MPEG1/2/4, QuickTime and WMV DRM formats at 30 FPS, the player also supports audio playback courtesy of MP3 and WMA.
The devices will be competing in an increasingly heated fray, occupied by among other French maker Archos with its
4-inch AV500 and
7-inch AV700 models, as well as Creative with its
30 GB Zen Vision and Apple with its recently introduced
video-enabled iPod audio player.
Measuring in at 5.5 x 3.5 x .5 inches, the HandHeld Entertainment ZVUE 500 and 400 players are expected to begin shipping in the second quarter of 2006 for $300 USD and $225 USD, respectively.
